About the PDHPE Teachers’ Association
The PDHPE Teachers’ Association (PDHPETA) is a professional organisation committed to supporting the professional needs and interests of Personal Development, Health and Physical Education (PDHPE) teachers from Kindergarten to Year 12 across all educational sectors in New South Wales.
The Association has its origins within the Department of School Education and initially served government school educators. In 1995, membership was formally extended to include teachers from the non-government sector, reflecting a broader commitment to the wider PDHPE teaching community.
Over time, the Association has evolved in both scope and identity. Previously known as the PE Head Teachers’ Council, Health Studies Head Teachers’ Council, and PDHPE Head Teachers’ Council, it has continually adapted to meet the changing needs of the profession.
A significant milestone in the Association’s history occurred at the 1997 Annual Conference, where members unanimously endorsed the expansion of the Association’s charter to encompass the professional development and advocacy needs of all PDHPE teachers, from early career educators to experienced practitioners, across all school years.
PDHPETA continues to be a vital platform for professional connection, curriculum advocacy, and the promotion of high-quality PDHPE teaching in NSW schools.

Historically, the Association was a Department of School Education group which expanded its membership to include the non-government sector in 1995. Past titles of the Association include PE Head Teachers’ Council, Health Studies Head Teachers’ Council and PDHPE Head Teachers’ Council.
Annual Conference 1997 was the scene for further evolution. The membership agreed to expand its charter to include the professional needs and interests of all teachers of PDHPE K-12.
